The Stroker
2018, Installation view

The Stroker is a two-channel video installation based on Takala's two week-long intervention at Second Home, a trendy East London coworking space for young entrepreneurs and startups. During the intervention Takala posed as a wellness consultant named Nina Nieminen, the founder of cutting-edge company Personnel Touch who were allegedly employed by Second Home to provide touching services in the workplace.

The Committee

For her Emdash Award Project, Takala gave the opportunity to decide on how to use the majority of the Award production budget to a committee of children between 8–12 years old from the Eastside Youth Centre in Bow, London. After their research and development costs, the children had £7,000 to play with. Following a series of summer workshops, the Committee met in a dedicated area within Frieze Projects and made a public announcement of their decision to create a 'five-star bouncy house.'

Drive With Care
(excerpt), 2013, 12:54 min video

Based on Takala's time spent undercover as a teacher in an elite boarding school in the USA, Drive With Care explores people's strategies for survival and how faculty members and their families negotiate their own space within the institution. The piece is about finding loopholes - places to breathe - while being careful not to violate shared rules.

The Trainee
(excerpt), 2008, Installation

To realize The Trainee, the artist worked for a month undercover as the trainee “Johanna Takala” in the marketing department of the multinational Deloitte where only a few people in management knew of the true nature of the project.

Real Snow White
(excerpt), 2009, 9:15 min video

The absurd logic of the “real character” and the extreme discipline of Disneyland become apparent when a real fan of Disney’s Snow White is banned from entering the park in a Snow White costume.

(excerpt), 2006, 10:25 min video (16:9)

Wallflower takes place in an event for Finnish tourists which is based on the traditional Finnish Summer Pavilion dance. Mostly older couples on their holidays attend these types of events, and as in the traditional events they are based on it is deemed inappropriate to ask strangers to dance and attendees dance only with their partners.

The Messengers
(excerpt), 2008, installation / media intervention
3 phone calls in Croatian with English subtitles on monitors
3 excerpts from Story magazine with English translations

The Messengers is an intervention into a Croatian magazine called Story, specialising in celebrity news and gossip and its fixation with local celebrity Vlatka Pokos. The basis of the piece is the idea of inverted gossip. Gossip can be any small detail about the life of someone famous as long as it portrays the person in a negative light. Instead of spreading juicy gossip, Takala sets out to report pieces of insignificant but positive acts whose value in scandalous terms is nil, yet when performed by a celebrity become newsworthy.

Broad Sense
(excerpt), 2011, Installation, 8:36 min video (16:9), 19 T-shirts

Broad Sense is based on an intervention in the European Parliament in Brussels. First the same question about dress code in European Parliament was sent via e-mail to the local EP information office of each member state. Then the varying responses were printed on 19 T-shirts that the artist wore inside the Parliament over the course of three days.

Easy Rider
(excerpt), 2006, 4:25 min video

(excerpt), 2010, 7:50 min video (16:9)

Players portrays six poker professional living amongst a larger poker community in Bangkok and the rules that govern their community.

The Shining Shining
(excerpt), 2007, double screen video, 11 min

This video concentrates on the studio audience attending the filming of a morning TV show in Istanbul. The program is hosted by the famous Seda Sayan and is watched by housewives around the country for two and a half hours every weekday. In this video, the camera juxtaposes the perfectly fake host with her worshipping and heartbreakingly real audience.
